QADIR ALI BAIG THEATRE FESTIVAL 2017
Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Festival’s 12th edition shall feature works of world-renowned playwrights like Ibsen, Manto, Alkazi, Dattani and others. It hosts 150 artistes at various venues across the city for 10 days. The Festival that has placed Hyderabad on the global map of theatre excellence and is on the calendar of major international repertories besides audiences of the twin-cities, is today regarded as one of the four largest theatre festivals of the country and probably, the biggest privately-run theatre festival.
The theatre festival curated by Padmashri recipient Mohammad Ali Baig is a tribute to his father, Hindustani theatre legend, late Qadir Ali Baig sahib, whose iconic theatre movement from 1970 to 1984, with trendsetting historical theatre pageants and path-breaking social dramas made him one of the founding fathers of serious theatre in the country, especially in Hyderabad. As film maker, writer and philosopher Mahesh Bhatt said, “In an age when story telling has been reduced to video-gaming, it was very brave of Qadir Ali Baig to put all myths away and keep the tradition of theatre alive even today. It is far more exciting to discover the human truth and encounter a social problem through flesh and blood characters on stage.”
Plays by Nadira Zaheer Babbar, Neelam Man Singh Chowdhry, Mushtaq Kak, Surabhi Theatre, Feisal Alkazi, Ila Arun, Manav Kaul and Mohammad Ali Baig and a concert by sitar maestro Anoushka Shankar with her 7-member orchestra from London, playing to the restored Indo-British-German film ‘Shiraz’ comprise this year’s line-up of meaningful, world-class plays. As the Festival Director Mohammad Ali Baig says, “It’s a responsibility because this Festival in the past 12 years has become a people’s and the city’s Festival. Not just the city’s audience, but performers and playwrights from all over the country schedule themselves to be here in Hyderabad around that time”.
