Currently running in its second season, The FOB and I is a critically praised web-series that revolves around two young women living in Los Angeles.  While one of the characters is “fresh of the boat” (a FOB) from India, the other is Indian-American. When forced to live together in a Hollywood apartment, these two cousins discover that even when you seem similar, you can be so different. The series has touched hearts in both USA and India with its endearing and hilarious portrayal of how Indians living abroad navigate the evolving meaning of “being Indian” in a time when the western world appropriates Indian culture.

The premiere episode of the second season of The FOB and I hit the tube on June 7th, 2017. Season 2’s first episode (titled #Resist) focuses on the zeitgeist topic of racial discrimination of immigrants in Trump’s America. Partially shot at the International Women’s Day march in Los Angeles, the episode features an original protest anthem “Be The Light”.

The episode premiered at SeriesFest (an award-winning festival dedicated to showcasing the best and boldest in episodic storytelling from around the world) in July 2017, as a finalist of the Seed & Spark New Voices Crowdfunding Rally initiative, dedicated to discovering and bolstering new and diverse talent in the sphere of independent television. The series won the Jury’s Grand Prize which includes a lucrative development deal with Band of Outsiders and $30,000 towards production of the second season.

“The focus for The Fob & I was to bring an accurate portrayal of Indians to western screens, flipping stereotypes of Indian immigrants in America. Sita and Jisha have been raised under incredibly different circumstances and are very different women with strong personalities. Meena (series creator) and I had plenty of opportunities to learn from our adventures in Los Angeles – where chai turns into chai tea lattes and yoga into hot yoga,” says Noopur Sinha, producer of The FOB and I.

Season 2 will have more episodes releasing later this year.

Season 1 of The FOB and I features 5 short episodes (approx. 5 mins each) that focus on the Indian-American experience of living in a cultural melting pot like Los Angeles. In their initial days as roommates, the webisodes follow the girls as they try in vain to find a half-decent place in LA to get chai, as they navigate the stress of Tinder and dating the ‘forbidden’ black Muslim guy, as they long for the joys of Holi back home, and as they dance and sing around the streets of LA in an original Bollywood number!

“We created The Fob & I as a way to authentically depict South Asians and express their experience in America in a funny and accessible way. The show has been appreciated by people from various countries because I think it echoes the current need to embrace and understand other cultures in an incredibly divided world. We were fed up of the stereotypical portrayal of Indians in western media, and decided to use comedy as a tool to shout out loud that India is much more than “curries and sarees”,” shares Meenakshi Ramamurthy, creator and director of the viral series.
