In current time, there is a lot of stress due to several reasons around us. Though the little wanderer within me wants to go away from all these hustles and crowd. But travelling has changed. One has to be very careful about many other things while travelling, like safety, hygiene, etc. Has it changed the way we used to travel? Is this the “latest trend” of travelling?

To understand the meaning of these trends, we bring you the next chapter of the story “Changing Trends in Travelling post COVID19”. We now speak with Mr. Vipul Prakash, Chief Operating Officer, MakeMyTrip to throw light on various new trends that MakeMyTrip has adopted.

Vipul PrakashThe pandemic has reimagined and rewired the travel and hospitality industry globally and in India. The pandemic situation is live and evolving and until a vaccine becomes available to all, people will continue to prioritize safety and social distancing will continue to be a norm. That’s why we are over-indexing on safety and hygiene protocols with all our travel partners and have worked on safety assurance programs like MySafety to boost travelers’ confidence to hit the road again. The safety programme has been designed in collaboration with our partners to elevate hygiene and safety standards across all travel touchpoints. Also, as an extension to our industry-wide safety initiatives, we have launched a comprehensive safety compliance & audit program for hotels, as per the guidelines of WHO and the Government of India, together with Deloitte. So far, 2000 hotels have registered for the program and we hope to see many more independent hotels signing up for this hygiene and safety protocols audit in the future.

We are focused on building a connected trip experience for travelers that is easy and seamless. As a travel super app that offers a full spectrum of travel services, we are constantly enriching our offerings across to provide contactless end-to-end experiences while providing great options and value. For instance, to offer no-touch last-mile transit connectivity to our flyers, with the help of our cab partners we are providing ultra-sanitized cab services across major airports in the country. This offering has been seamlessly integrated into the flight funnel – enabling flyers to pre-book their flight and airport cab in just one click. Similarly, we are offering e-pass assistance service for inter-city cab travel allowing riders to navigate from one state to the other without any worry of restrictions. We have also launched an AI-powered app for driver-partners to ensure that all safety measures are followed by the driver-partner and the rider throughout the trip. Through this tech-proprietary tool, the driver-partner can only start the trip after a proper mask usage has been detected via a selfie. We are also using optical character recognition technology to ensure the presence of sanitizers in the cabs.

At MakeMyTrip, we are ensuring that our travellers can plan and book with greater flexibility and ease as the uncertainty continues to linger on. Almost 95% of our hotel bookings are happening on flexible fares as we are working with hotel partners to come up with flexible tariff options till the day of check-in. As travel picks up domestically and more countries re-open their borders for travellers from India in the future, we understand that our customers are looking for flexible booking and payment options. Our ‘Book Now, Pay Later’ option promises ease and flexibility to our customers – allowing them to pre-book a holiday for just INR 1000 with an added benefit of making modifications to the travel plan 72 hours before the travel date, without any liability –all with an aim to bring back the joy of traveling again.
