In an exclusive fireside chat with Duolingo English Test takers, Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra opened up about his journey of learning English. A self-taught English learner, Neeraj shared that he picked up vocabulary from his coaches over the years and even practiced using the Duolingo app on his phone.
He spoke about working with coaches from across the world, many of whom spoke different languages. This inspired him to learn a few words in languages like German. Smiling, he recalled, “Once I greeted someone confidently in German, but when they started speaking fluently, I quickly switched back to English!”
Speaking to students preparing to embark on their journeys abroad, Neeraj shared heartfelt advice: “I come from a small village, and I had a dream to represent my country and play for India. If you have a dream, don’t just keep it as a dream. Work hard for it and make the people who matter in your life believe in it too. Their support makes everything stronger. It may take time, but if you keep working at it, it will happen.”
His message is a reminder that with courage, consistency, and belief, no dream is ever out of reach.
