Excerpts here:
Q) Tell us about the traditional Indian medical practices for mental health?
Taniyaa: There are a lot of Indian regional practices to manage or treat mental health. However, when we consider mental wellness, there are plenty of them all over India. For instance, sun gazing, Brahma mudra, and more. These are very lifestyle oriented activities to manage wellness. These practices not only help in our mental well-being but also help us to live a bit optimistically.

Q) How is it different from the Western approaches?
Taniyaa: Yes, they are very different from regional practices including homeopathy. Western practices primarily include allopathy. Allopathy focuses on treating mental ailments but not on preventing the ailment. But in allied sciences, like Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Yunani, or Indian ritual practices are far different from allopathy because they target wellness and prevention. They don’t target only the treatment; however, they work on the lifestyle. If your lifestyle is safeguarded, these problems might not occur.
Q) What is the problem with curing mental health?
Taniyaa: It’s essential to have good mental health for everybody. Because if we have good mental health, we give back the positive energy to others. But first, we need to prevent and manage our mental health; later, if the need comes, we must treat it. We might not take this treatment if our mental immunity is strong.
Q) Has the pandemic impacted the mental wellness of people?
Taniyaa: Definitely! It has not only impacted the mental wellness of people, but people also realized the power of allied and alternative medicine. Suddenly, there is a boom in the Ayurveda, Unani, Yoga, and Homeopathy industries. Now this has become a habbit that people are still following.
Q) What is the role of Homeopathy?
Taniyaa: People believe in homeopathy mainly because it has no side effects. It’s not difficult like other allopathy, which is otherwise a bit aggressive. Homeopathy is gentle and works in a passive way. This is the reason it is safe for babies and pregnant women. Another big thing is flower remedy in homeopathy which can be the next big thing in the industry. It is made out of fresh flowers. It would be a great boon in the mental health industry. 38 flowers are present in this industry for curing mental wellness. This remedy is a philosophy written by Dr. Batch in 1990s.
Q) Is there any misconception attached to homeopathy?
Taniyaa: The biggest misconception is homeopathy takes time to act. Unfortunately, we have a habbit of popping a painkiller, and then the pain is gone. But we miss the significant issue here, that is, the side effect of the medicine, which will not go away in one day. So these medicines are harmful. On the other hand, if the right homeopathy medicine is given to the right person, it can never go wrong. It just depends on the prescription, dosage and time.
Q) People are more inclined towards allopathy. Do you think it is changing?
Taniyaa: It is changing. And all thanks to Covid (if I may say so). Instead of taking cough syrup that is present in the market already, people are now opting for homeopathy for children. People are more aware now and questioning every other thing. They know that there are side effects in allopathy medicines. I am not against allopathy but will always advise homeopathy for chronic diseases. So I could see the change among people, but more change should be expected.
Q) Stress and anxiety are the main problems people face now. How do people treat them?
Taniyaa: Everybody has stress and anxiety. It’s a common problem because we all want things we never have. And often, the things that make you happy are not what you chase in your daily life. So take time for yourself, and do things that enrich and help your mental health. And always engage yourself with any form of exercise.
Q) What fundamental awareness do people need to know for mental wellness?
Taniyaa: The basic awareness that people need to know is everybody is going through something, so be kind. The more empathetic people are towards each other, the better they feel themselves from the inside.

Q) Where do we stand right now in terms of mental health?
Taniyaa: It’s been six years for me in the mental wellness industry; when I compare the stature of mental illness in other countries, we have a long way to go. But that doesn’t mean we are not doing any work. Post covid, people are keen on therapy, and a whole new career exists around this. This means the wellness industry is growing, and so is the mental health industry.
Q) There’s a stigma attached to it. How is it going to fade away?
Taniyaa: Yes, there is a stigma, but it will stay in India and worldwide. People will take time to open up and it won’t happen in a day. We need to work on the stigma with little awareness.
Q) Organizations where people can turn when they seek mental wellness?
Taniyaa: There is an organization which is named Universe. It is there for positive mental health, which I established when I was 19. It helps people get therapy at a subsidized rate. I will again say that avail therapy. Think about support groups; they are there to help. All these things help you to be in a good position mentally.
Q) Any advice you want to give to our readers?
Taniyaa: To all the readers out there, I would like to say that your mental and physical health are the same. If you don’t value your physical health, it will affect your mental health and vice versa. Make sure you’re mentally fit. It can result from having some time out for yourself and doing things that make you happy. Also, you need to rely on good medicine. Indulge in some regular exercise. Always remember, only you have the key to make yourself happy and nobody else.
